Currently I am sitting in a dark office with all the shutters closed to keep the heat outside. About 40 degrees and the only place safe right now is either inside or inside the water. Luckily with these heat waves we get some very favourable wind direction. East wind to be exact, blows offshore on the west-coast. Already the summer of 25 is the best one we have in 11 years here, but it seems to rely only get better. Scrolling trough the endless footage of the past days it really looks like winter, yet with warm water and high temperatures. It is all fun and games untill...

Until there is no water left on the reef. Let me explain myself a little. After a very crazy session with a small window of incredible tubes I shoot a few pictures of empty barrels. Caption, ‘who is ready for some more of these‘. One guy puts his hand up and the next morning it is game-on. Conditions slightly bigger and especially more powerful the waves do not really look like the ones on the picture at all. In fact, they look scary. Our friend picks up the camera while I get some of the gnarliest waves of the summer, or any summer for that matter. Waves really going below sea level and surfing the reef all alone it really is playing with fire.

Less tubes more fun?

love barrels. Yet there is a price to pay to get them. First of all you need to be capable to surf and read the waves. Second you need to pay to play, wipe outs are guaranteed. Somehow the pictures always look so much easier then the real thing!
Occasionally there is a skilled tube-seeker from a far away place ready for action, but most of these crazy waves I rather surf solo. Contrasting this mad tunnel adventure we score just pure fun waves the very next day. To begin with we have a perfect crew. OG surf guide guest and our board shaper, with his mom behind the camera.
