Surfing the swell of the decade with surf guide algarve

Nazare is already on fire for so long the jetskis and tow teams are wishing for a few days rest. Instead the swell of the decade pops up on the forecast. WSL calling the big wave event on and big wave surfers from all over the world flying to Portugal for the event. Meanwhile Surf Guide Algarve is trying to find a spot to score. Preferably without any jetski assist… Finishing six week of shared stokes with our ‘first-ever‘ surf guide algarve guest, the ocean provides. Scoring epic waves with no one out. Followed up by a much more chilled surf with a new crew the next day. Enjoy the story!

The grand finale

Every surf trip there are two very important sessions, the first and the last. Starting with a good session sets you up with good confidence and a good flow for whats coming. Finishing off with a bang is maybe even more important. Leaving the algarve remembering your last epic waves. Already checking flights for a possible next adventure. Grand final day, obviously on the swell of the decade, just to add a bit extra juice. Rolling the dice and score an insane good session at Cabanas Velhas on a reef. Advanced surf but luckily no jet skis needed for this one!

freak wave

Freak wave coming in! All monring there are small almondy barrels to find. Backdoor the section and you get a nice shampoo. Yet what happened with this wave is still a big question. Somehow the wave completely sucked dry and slabbed like crazy. Hard to navigate all this madness but stoked to have it on the picture.

Jävlar, vilka vågor! Swedish for “what epic waves!”

About eight years in, we welcome surfers from all over the world. Interesting enough, very little from Sweden. Maybe they stick to the snow thing, yet there are plenty of Norwegian surfers making their way down. Two brothers flying in and get in touch with Surf Guide Algarve. Starting their surf trip with a bang, beautiful gentle waves at Mareta. Sun rising, turning the whole place orange, clean conditions and an easy peak. Also joining for the first time is our new VIP guest, who also receives his nickname today ‘Frenchy‘. Arguably his real name is much more beautiful but way to complicated to yell from the other side of the line up when a bomb comes his way!
