Surf Guide Algarve saves the best for last
Our first ever Surf Guide Algarve guest is visiting, again. Possibly you have seen him in one of the latest posts. As every trip, even the longest ones, eventually they come to an end. Looking back on a couple of sessions that really stand out, we can say we scored. Yet mother ocean has a, not so little, surprise for us. Another storm hits, luckily a little less destructive then some of the others. But sending plenty of swell our direction. Firework is on the menu and Surf Guide Algarve saves the best for last!
Fireworks
Forecasting big swells will always be super tricky. Websites, buoys, all very smart, but combine this with local tides, wind and whatever comes into play. Incredible how close they get it every day. Funny how often it goes wrong too. Five meter swell on the charts, code orange for the whole coastline. Meanwhile most of the beaches you would look at in a swell like this are flat. Quickly shifting gears we set sail for Zavial. Fireworks we ask for and that is just what we get. Point break zavial with no one out. Crazy.
Round two, and three
Rule, never walk away from good waves. Rising swell and a couple of very long paddles back taking their toll. After about two hours I get one of the best waves of the session and decide to call it and go in. Our friend is already inside fighting for his life and happy to turn towards the beach. Scrambling on the rocks I meet our photographer friend *again! Dude, you already done? After a little hesitation and looking at empty waves I decide to paddle back out. Buddy saves his shoulders for later. Now the swell really maxed and it is mission impossible. After a good try he has to throw in the white towel and we mission to a beach with smaller waves to finish the day with a smile.
Round three
Short drive, expectations low, we find small wave perfection. Some surfers in the water but plenty of waves for everyone. Washing off the scary paddle out in style our friend goes hard on the small waves. Dog on the beach, camera in hand, best way to spend the afternoon!
From Surf guide to Tour guide
Market expansion maybe? Nah, do not worry, we stick to what we do best and like most. Today is special, we mission to a hidden gem in the middle of the Algarve. Honestly this is the first time in 11 years I visit this waterfall, but the whole experience is magic. Together with our ‘first ever guiding‘ friend we go on an adventure and one that will stay with us for ever. Finishing off at our favourite restaurant / second home The Hangout, a perfect day.
