FUN FACT PRAIA CASTELEJO
If you are lucky you can buy the same fish you just shared the line-up with off one of the fisherman.
Surf Praia Castelejo
Castalejo is one of the many beaches on the west coast. With reef/rocks and sandbars spread out over the full length of the beach. This place will offer different types of waves. Depending on the swell this beach break ranges from beginner friendly to stuff for pro’s only. This place can have a lot of current. There are some tricky rocks under water so make sure you know where they hide.
The surf beach of Castalejo is located just outside the town of Vila do Bispo and easy to get to by car. There is quite a big parking space. There is also a Surfschool that will provide surf lessons in season and it’s also possible to rent equipment. In summer a cute little beach bar/restaurant with terrace and toilet are opened (no wetsuits allowed!). Lifeguards keep an eye on the summer crowds as well.
When is the surf best at Castalejo
Facing west-north-west this spot gets plenty of swell. This break can have many faces and can change four times a day. There is not much protection from the wind. There is one big rock formation on the right side that gives the beach a spectacular backdrop and is often used by fisherman. This pace can probably hold up to 8ft waves, but with this size it’s pro’s only. The black cliffs surrounding the beach are very impressive. Most of the surfers will surf right in front of the carpark between the rocks. In summer there are a few surf schools that use this space too. If you decide to walk to the other side (towards Cordoama) make sure you are aware of the many (hidden) rocks in the line-up.
Surf risk factors at Cordoama
The main surf risk at Cordoama is the (hidden) rocks. Be aware where to surf and what the tide is doing. When the swell becomes somewhat bigger, local surfers will be ripping these waves. Always make sure to respect them and give them space. As usual, keep an eye out for rips, especially when the waves get bigger and near the rocks.

Castalejo Surf, Behind Vila do Bispo we drive the beautiful, almost African style, road towards the sea. On the end of the road there are 2 options. Go right for Cordoama or left for Castalejo. With the surfguide tours we have surfed Cordoama a little more often...
Surfgirls, There are more and more girls in the line up, and I think this is great. Especially when that means that I get to share the thing that I love doing most, with 3 girls... Clean waves, The forecast looked ok, but honestly; my day was already good just driving...
Winter (is for) waves The Algarve is known for the consistency of its waves. If you know where to go, willing to drive for it and don't have your expectations set too high, you'll find a wave (almost) every day of the year. For some unknown reason the biggest amount...
Happy New Year!!! 2018 was a fantastic year. It was the second year Surf Guide Algarve was operating and we had many happy guests, a lot of good surf and the only thing I can think of is to keep up these great vibes in 2019! (and making more posts...) So this is how...
Indo Surf? Often people ask me; ''wouldn't you want to go to Indo?'' My reply is always a bit the same; I would love to surf Indo waves and I would love to meet the local people but the fact is, there's more than enough surfers in the water there without me already. I...
