Grommet Surfing with Surf Guide Algarve at Zavial

As can be seen on the website, there is not really a minimum or maximum age to join the Surf Guide Algarve adventures. On condition that you can surf independent, know and respect the rules in the line-up and be stoked. For example, a few weeks ago we had a 70 year old shredder from the US. While now we are joined by a bunch of grommets from 8 and 11 years young. We will always ask the parents of kids to join the adventure. Important to realise is that all the guests surf under their own responsibilities and in case with kids it is just nice to have the parents around. An extra pair of eyes from the beach, sharing the beautiful moment and sometimes even able to shoot some surf photos. Enjoy the story and pictures of our perfect grommet surf at Zavial.

Surf like a grommet

Age is just a number, you are as old as you feel you are, and all that. Indeed the 70 year young American shredder and the 8 year old gromm both share the same stoke. Obviously in 62 years more life experience you learn how to take off with as little energy as possible. Meanwhile the kids just continue to surf, swim and boogie all day long. Its just epic to surf with two of these super high energetic, stoked and skilled surf kids. Whats more, it makes you want to surf like a grommet.

Serious with a smile

Different from surf-kids growing up here in Portugal, these kids only surf on holidays and sometimes in weekends. Next to surfing there is so much stuff you can do when your a kid. BMX, boogie, soccer, skate, you name it and these kids do it. But do not think for one second they are not serious about it. Surprisingly they are super committed in what they do. The older gromm is on the Surf Guides surfboard and really performs some amazing technical turns. Here is one…

Surfskate lesson

By all means, the gromms improve their surf skills by every wave they take. On a surfboard, swimming or on a boogie board. At this point they need a lot of time in the water to become ocean aware. Fill their pockets with different surf experiences that you can relay to in the next sessions to come. Balanced against a traditional surf lesson a surfskate lesson is in this case more effective. You can practice the same move or turn over and over again. Different from the ocean, the surfskate wave is always the same. To then master the turn the next day in the water.
