A memorable session on the west coast with Surf Guide Algarve

What makes one session stand out over the other? Waves to start with, but the crew is a really important factor too. Shared stokes are the best stokes, remember? Please keep in mind that every single guest receives the same vip service. Yet there is a crew of returning guests that really deserve a special place in our hart. Returning time and time again and always bringing fresh energy with them. Our first ever surf guide guest sharing the mission again together with a guy that sends us this message. ‘Hey dude, can we please go hunt for barrels when we are back, we did not score any on the Maldives.‘ Challenge accepted. A memorable session on the west coast with surf guide algarve, here we go!

Be careful what you wish for

Arriving on an empty beach with fun looking surf. No one out and plenty of potential. Swell will push and tides drop. Conclusion, is simple, do not be fooled with what you see, cause it will really start firing later. Sun is rising while the ocean gets rid of her morning sickness. As expected the beach break is a real workout. Positioning is hard and the current harder. Our goofie footed surf guide algarve guest trades his wish for barrels for long easy lefts. Carving from the top of the point all the way down to the beach. Russian roulette with mother ocean, some waves look straight out of a surf movie while others will break your board without a doubt.

The ocean gave a second chance

Every wave is different, right? Today I bring two boards to the beach, my 5‘7 go-to shortboard and my 6‘5 stepup/ barrel board. Honestly I should be riding the big board more often. Getting in early and the speed she handles is just next level. Obviously she is not as easy to turn as the shortboard, so starting on that one. Sometimes you need to pay to play, and today is one of those days. As soon as a big wave stands up behind me I know I am deep. Deep or too deep? Somehow I make the drop and get a huge speed pump in, the barrel folds over me and for a moment I am in surfing heaven. Unfortunately this moment last very short and the wave just explodes on me. Rattled but not hurt I come up. Straightaway I know my board is damaged. In fact, half the board is missing. Run back to our stuff and before I can make up my mind or start doubting I am on my way out again. In the distance a new set approaches, I get in position and the wave looks exactly identical as the one that broke my board. Difference is that now I am on a bigger board. Completely disappearing from view the barrel folds over me, I pump and get out clean. Big thanks to our surf guide algarve guest for taking the picture. A real special moment that will be remembered for a long time.
